Edinburgh Speedway offers its condolences to the family and friends of Graham Drury who has passed away at the age of 71.

Graham was a rider, team manager and promoter over a period of more than 50 years and was a significant figure in the sport.

Monarchs' chairman and co-promoter Alex Harkess formed a close relationship with Graham over the latter part of his time in Speedway. Alex says "I hadn't really known Graham while he was a rider, but he was instrumental in my becoming Chairman of the BSPA. He wanted me to stand and advised me to do so, and even told me how he thought the vote would go after going round the other promoters.

"Ever since then I called him 'My Manager' and that's how I used to catch his attention! We often discussed things between us and stayed in touch during my time as Chairman.

"Over a long period I have considered him a friend. Like all of us he had his edge, and always sought the best for his own clubs. I'm shocked that he is gone so soon and I send my condolences to Denise and their family."

Monarchs' co-promoter John Campbell admitted to have crossed swords with Graham at times but added "Graham and his wife Denise were always very welcoming at any track they were the promoters and they were very good company socially. "
