The Scotwaste Monarchs showed great determination to score a 56-37 win over Glasgow in the first leg of the Scottish Cup at Armadale.

It was probably the best team performance of the season by Monarchs, with George Stancl especially brilliant, well backed up by Kaj Laukkanen, guest Paul Clews, Derek Sneddon and Matthew Wethers.

Glasgow were indebted to guest James Grieves who scored 16 and who was never beaten to the first corner.

The race between Stancl and Grieves in heat 10 will be a strong contender for the annual award for race of the season.

Paul Clews scored 12 paid 14, and yet lost points due to an engine fauilure while on a 5-1 in heat 8.

Several of the Glasgow riders were disappointing, none more so that Craig Watson who was fortunate to score 4.

The return leg is the second part of the Ashfield double header on Sunday. Unfortunately Paul Clews is unavailable and Monarchs will race with Dan Giffard and Arlo Bugeja at reserve.
