Monarchs had to utilise two guests at Workington, but kept the scores close until falling away over the closing heats to a 40-50 defeat.

Ronnie Correy found that his leg injury from a fall in Friday's home match had worsened, and pulled out of the meeting. Newcastle's Josef Franc came in and we were in the unusual position of having 2 guests.

Franc proved to be unlucky, knocked off on the first bend of heat 1 which bent his bike and caused him to switch. He struggled and came fourth, before settling down later.

Ricky Ashworth turned in a spectacular display and was the only Monarchs' man on the night to beat any of the three home heat leaders.

Of our own riders, Matthew rode very well and took our other two victories. Derek deserved more than 4 points with some steady riding, especially a double pass in heat 8, and Andrew battled well for his three.

Neither Daniele nor Henrik seemed to have enough speed to be very competitive, though Daniele did have the satisfaction of beating his fellow countryman Carpanese.
