Monarchs' fans were delighted to meet three great riders from New Zealand at their video show in the Thomas Morton Hall.

Ivan Mauger was the expected guest at the show, but not only did we meet the six-times World Champion, but also double World Champion of the fifties Ronnie Moore and 1965 Monarchs' rider Colin McKee.

All three spoke to the supporters and said how much they were enjoying their welcome.

Mauger recalled with fondness his battles with Doug Templeton and George Hunter in the sixties at Old Meadowbank. "They were good riders anywhere," he said, "but on their own track there were as formidable as King Kong!"

He paid tribute to his friend Ronnie Moore, saying "I doubt if anyone realises what a hero Ronnie was back home, and indeed still is. Without him I doubt either myself or Barry Briggs would have ridden Speedway."

Ronnie Moore had expected colder weather, saying "I've brought my thermals with me but I'm pleased I haven't had to wear them! I'm very impressed with the turnout of fans for a pre-season event and I wish your team a successful season."

Colin McKee revealed that only a misunderstanding with Ian Hoskins had prevented him returning for more than his single season with Monarchs. "I always enjoyed the Edinburgh track and was made very welcome by the fans."

The trio were happy to chat with the fans and sign autographs, one by Ivan on a race jacket from his 1985 Powderhall "Farewell to Scotland" meeting.

2007 Monarchs Henrik Moller and Derek Sneddon were at the show, as were former Monarchs' captain Kevin Little, 1997 Monarch Neil Hewitt plus surprise visitor Richard Hall of Peterborough.
